Xi'an University of Science and Technology (XUST) hasa long and distinguished history. Its roots can be traced back to theMetallurgical Mining Department of Beiyang University (Or Beiyang Institute ofTechnology) which was founded in 1895. In July 1938, the Beiyang Institute of Technology was moved tothe Northwest Institute of Technology.
In 1957, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy ofNorthwest Institute of Technology was incorporated into Xi'an JiaotongUniversity.On September 15 1958, the Xi’an Mining Institute was formally established onthe base of a partial faculty and the facilities of Mining Department, GeologyDepartment and Basic Courses Department of Jiao Tong University. It became oneof the two five-year undergraduate institutes under the direct supervision ofthe then Ministry of Coal Industry. The original CAS (Chinese Academy of Science)president Guo Moruo wrote the school name.
In August 1998, the State Council detached theinstitute from the Coal Ministry and gave jurisdiction to the ShaanxiProvincial Government. In June 1999, approved by the Ministry of Education, theinstitute changed its name to Xi'an Institute of Science and Technology and inApril 2003, it was officially renamed Xi'an University of Science andTechnology (XUST). XUST is an officially recognized Civilized Campus and Garden Unit ofXi’an City. It has two academic campuses which are named as Lintong Campus andYanta Campus.
At the present, it has 17 colleges or departments, onenational key discipline-Safety Technology and Engineering, 8 key disciplines ofprovincial and ministerial level, 8 state and provincial-level featuredsubjects, 14 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 keylaboratories of provincial and ministerial level, 14 key laboratory of Ministryof Education, one State Mine Rescue Xi’an Research Centre.
In addition to the 56 undergraduate programs, XUST has6 Post-Doctorate mobile research centers, 32 Doctorate programs, 86 Master’sprograms, 20 Master’s mandated programs in Engineering and an MBA TrainingCentre. The present enrollment, including doctoral, postgraduate as well asundergraduate students, reaches more than 23,006.
The last fifty years of development (under the leadership of theMinistry of Education, the former Ministry of Coal Industry, the CPC ShaanxiProvincial Party Committee and the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government) haswitnessed several generations of XUST students making important contributionsto China’s coal industry and regional economic and social development throughpioneering, tenacity, personnel training and arduous scientific research whichalways kept a close connection with the local community.
XUST has now expanded into a comprehensive yet continuallydeveloping, multi-disciplinary education and research university with mining and its relateddisciplines as its main traits, covering five main disciplines: Engineering,Science, Management, Literature, and Law. It has nurtured more than 60,000graduates and they are now playing very important roles in all areas ofsociety.
