Bimal K. Bose (Life Fellow, IEEE) is currently Professor and holds the Condra Chair of Excellence in Power Electronics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he is responsible for the power electronics and drives research program from the year 1987. He is also the Distinguished Scientist (formerly Chief Scientist) of EPRI-Power Electronics Applications Center, Knoxville, Honorary Professor of Shanghai University , China University of Mining and Technology and Xi'an Mining Institute (also Honorary Director of its Electrical Engineering Institute), China, and Senior Adviser of Beijing Power Electronics Research and Development Center, China.

He received the B.E. degree from Calcutta University, India, the M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the Ph.D. degree from Calcutta University in 1956, 1960, and 1966, respectively. Early in his career, he served as a faculty member in Calcutta University (Bengal Engineering College) for a number of years. For his research contributions, he was awarded the Premchand Roychand Scholarship and Mouat Gold Medal by the Calcutta University in 1968 and 1970, respectively. In 1971, he joined Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, as Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering . In 1976, he joined General Electric Corporate Research and Development, Schenectady, NY as research engineer and served there for 11 years (1976-87). During this period, he also served as Adjunct Professor in RPI. He has been power electronics consultant in a number of industries that include GE R & D Center, Lutron Electronics, Bendix Corporation, PCI Ozone Corporation, EPRI, Research Triangle Institute, Honeywell, Reliance Electric Co., Delco Remy, Motion Control Engineering, etc.

Dr. Bose's research interest practically spreads over the entire spectrum of power electronics, and specifically includes power converters, ac drives, microcomputer control, sensorless control, EV/HV drives, and expert system, fuzzy logic and neural network applications in power electronic and drives. He has published more than 170 papers, and holds 21 US patents. He has authored/edited six books in power electronics: Modern Power Electronics and AC Drives (Prentice Hall, 2002), Power Electronics and AC Drives (Prentice Hall, 1986, translated into Japanese, Chinese, Korean and several low cost English editions), Adjustable Speed AC Drive Systems ( IEEE Press,1981), Microcomputer Control of Power Electronics and Drives (IEEE Press,1987), Modern Power Electronics (IEEE Press, 1992), Power Electronics and Variable Frequency Drives (IEEE Press, 1997). His book Power Electronics and AC Drives has been used as a graduate level text in many universities in the world. Besides, he has made contributions in several books and Encyclopedias. He was the Guest Editor of the Proceedings of the IEEE Special Issue on Power Electronics and Motion Control (August 1994). He received GE Publication Award, Silver Patent Medal and a number of IEEE prize paper awards. He is listed in Marquis Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Electromagnetics Academy, Who's Who in Technology, Int'l. Who's Who in Engineering, American Men and Women in Sciences, Who's Who in Asian Americans, etc. In 1990, he was selected as one of the great Developers, Movers and Shakers in Power Electronics by PCIM Journal.

Dr. Bose has served the IEEE in various capacities that include Chairman of the IEEE-IE Society Power Electronics Council, Associate Editor of IE Transactions, IEEE-IECON Power Electronics Chairman, Chairman of IEEE-IAS Industrial Power Converter Committee, IAS member in Neural Network Council, and various other national and international professional organizations. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the IEEE . He also served as Distinguished Lecturer in IEEE-IA and IE Societies. He has given invited presentations, tutorials, and keynote addresses throughout the world.

Dr. Bose received the 1993 IEEE Industry Applications Society's Outstanding Achievement Award (highest) "for outstanding contributions in the application of electricity to industry", 1994 IEEE Industrial Electronics Society's Eugene Mittelmann Award (highest) "in recognition of outstanding contributions to research and development in the field of power electronics and a lifetime achievement in the area of motor drives", 1994 IEEE Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award "for outstanding achievements in power electronics and drives technology", 1996 IEEE Lamme Gold Medal “for contributions to the advancement of power electronics and electrical machine drives", and 1997 IEEE Meritorious Achievement Award "for exemplary and sustained contributions to continuing education", and 2000 IEEE Millennium model.
